Abstract
The video placement problem has been studied for more than a decade. Previous works were based on relatively stable environments which meant that they could find the optimal solution across a certain time frame to meet the unchanged demand. However their works may not be applicable at present.
Recently, nearly everybody can access online content via the internet. Moreover with the rise of the social networks and the extensive variety of streamed videos available, demand will change rapidly based on the users’ preference. In addition, current cloud-aware datacenters are commonly used for backend storage. In such cloud-aware datacenters, resource pooling is one of the important criteria that can dynamically reconfigure the resources to meet the variable demand. Therefore we have to take this concept into account when performing video placement in the new environment.
The aim of this paper is to design an online cloud-aware video placement mechanism that can do the reconfiguration with a limited overhead and can strive to minimize the number of devices required. Furthermore, we introduce scalable video coding (SVC) to store different qualities of video data to provide the convenience for user to arbitrarily switch from different resolution options. Due to a rate of the high agility, our mechanism can adapt to the rapid change in demand.
