Abstract
This research involved quasi-experimental design and sampling method to explore the effects of the nursing interventions on the family satisfaction during the visits in pediatric intensive care unit. Sixty families were chosen who had children first admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit at a medical center of northern Taiwan. Thirty subjects were recruited as the control group and thirty as experimental group. Nursing intervention was implemented for nurses in the pediatric intensive care unit after the data were collected in the control group. Then data were collected in the experimental group. A structured questionnaire study was used and data were analyzed by SPSS 11.0 for Windows and StatXact 4.0.
The results of this study are described as followings:
1. The top five needs of family are: (1) While visitation, primary nurse explains the condition of children actively. (2) I could know the complications of my child. (3) When the condition changed, nurses will notice us as soon as possible. (4) Nurses will teach me the knowledge and skills of caring my child while transfer to the ward and go back home. (5) While the visiting time, I can talk to the doctor and get information of my child.
2. There were significant different satisfactions between two groups. Post score of satisfaction was less than pre-score in the control group. That is the family’s satisfaction did not increase during hospitalization, the result of experimental group was elevated. It showed after accepted training of nursing intervention principle, the intervention which nurses provided elevated family’s satisfaction effectively.
3. There were highly positive relationship between visiting needs and satisfaction.
The findings of this study can facilitate nurses to have better understanding about family’s needs. It provides a direction while nurses are planning interventions.
