Abstract
This study introduces a Modified Index of Wetland Condition (MIWC), an innovative quantitative assessment tool developed to evaluate the ecological functions of urban wetlands. The MIWC framework, adapted from the Index of Wetland Condition (IWC), encompasses five critical sub-indices: hydrology, physical environment, water quality (environmental factors), riparian vegetation, and aquatic animals (biological factors). A comparative analysis was conducted on two urban wetlands in Taipei City-Green Lake and Tsui Lake-during 2017 and 2021. The assessment revealed that Tsui Lake demonstrated superior ecological functionality, achieving scores of 75 and 79, while Green Lake maintained a lower score of 51. Based on the sub-indices analysis, specific enhancement opportunities were identified for Green Lake, particularly in areas of water depth diversity, habitat elevation diversity, and species conservation. The study concludes by providing targeted recommendations for improving the ecological functions of both wetlands and demonstrates the MIWC's effectiveness as a practical tool for urban wetland management and conservation planning.
