Abstract
Hematuria is a frequently encountered problem. It can be self-limited or due to severe underlying disease. Since the widespread use of dipstick test, patients with hematuria have been increasing very quickly. Millions of patients was found over the world every year. The diagnosis of hematuria depends upon history taking, physical examinations, laboratory tests, image study and renal biopsy. Some procedures are costly, time-consuming, and invasive in nature. To avoid unnecessary examinations and to save medical resources, it is necessary to set up an appropriate diagnostic guideline. This paper discusses the definition of hematuria, followed by diagnostic approach and treatment. Besides, several clinical examples are presented in conjunction with an observations of 301 cases during January 1999 in outpatient service of National Taiwan University Hospital. It is hoped that an introduction of current concept can help doctors to manage the hematuria patients properly.
