Abstract
By the 20th century, the environmental impact of car civilization has made human introspected and gradually changed the thinking of urban and rural development as well as the values of progress. The making of the city planning early during Japanese ruling period had established the strong model and framework of the urban main streets in Kaohsiung city. Built during Japanese ruling period, Zhongshan Road had become the main urban road of urban portal images with the expansion of urban space and the changing of its structure over time. This road longitudinally crosses Kaohsiung city from north to south and plays a role of traffic communication and transportation corridor. In recent years Kaohsiung City has proceeded improving various city reconstructions in matching up the urban transformation and spatial regeneration programs, the urban landscape along Zhongshan / Bo-Ai Road has also completely changed its appearance.or the goal of improving city life and enhancement of image of Kaohsiung city, how could it work through the way of rebuilding the main street? Through the survey of composition of the streetscape, street life and social activities, and achievementhe of street design, the purpose of this research is to analyse the experience of main street design, which based on the concept of pedestrian-friendly. By the case study of the main street ──Zhongshan/ Bo-ai Road──the most important street in Kaohsiung city, this paper inpect the purposes above, looking over the implements process and practical experience in transformation of street.rom the result of case study of transformation of Zhongshan/ Bo-ai Road, it can show that to be an space of people''s city life, the main should consider the characteristic life of each section of street. At the same time it is also important to be aware of the fact that the use of a street is a dynamic process which changes over time. For the further goals to equipped qualities of experience of the entire environment of city, it should be taken more notice of their surroundings when improving the streets.
