Abstract
Water spinach ( Ipomoea aquatica Frosk) is
an important tropical vegetable crop in
Taiwan; however, not much of basic study
about this oriental vegetable has been done,
such as genetic analysis. Our objective of this
study was to analyze 10 water spinach
cultivars/lines. Cluster analysis of 144
reproductive RAPD bands produced by 34
10-mer random primers indicated that these
10 lines were genetic diverted. Offsprings
harvested from the same field either derived
from self- and open-pollinated seeds were
fairly different also indicated that water
spinach is naturally a highly cross -pollinated
crop. RAPD analysis was an effective
method in the genetic analysis of water
spinach cultivars, which could be a powerful
tool in the breeding program. However,
research in harvested system and selfincompatibility
needs to be focused.
