Abstract
The study proposes to examine the factors
that may contribute to explaining the countries
in Pacific Islands to recognize either Taipei or
Beijing over the years.
As far as Pacific Island countries are
concerned, recognition issue is likely to be
analyzed from three perspectives: international,
national and by-coastal relationship. Four
factors are used to evaluate the triangle
relationships. They are:
(1) Diplomatic relationship with the
countries in Pacific Island
(2) Degree of economic development of
the countries in Pacific Island;
(3) Degree of political stability of the
countries in Pacific Island;
(4) Frequency of high level officials from
Taipei or Beijing visiting the Pacific
Island countries;
All information related to the study comes
from the official record. All in all, the
importance of the research on Pacific Island
lies in the fact that it can help Taipei to reduce
risk in developing the relationship with the
countries in the region.
