Abstract
The thesis focuses on the thinking of Yan Fu, a famous translator and scholar. Many researches have indicated some points of Yan Fu’s thinking and academic contributions. They focus on Yan Fu's collections of translations and his translative skill. Some scholars consider Yan Fu was searching for wealth and power. On the other hand, some scholars argue that Yan Fu focuses mainly on Chinese traditional idea: Dao. This thesis is based on these past findings of research and attempts to bring up a new viewpoint of Yan Fu’s thinking. The new viewpoint tries to observe Yan Fu’s thinking by discussing two ideas: Tian Dao and Qun Dao. The thesis includes five chapters. The First chapter draws an outline of the background of Yan Fu, especially his academic progress and the spirit of his intellectual milieu. The Second Chapter is a review of some important researches, such as Benjamin Schwartz, Max K. W. Huang, and Wu Chang-liang’s papers. The review indicates that the conflict between the Chinese tradition and the Western culture is an important point of the past researches on Yan Fu’s thinking. The thesis further develops the two ideas to supplement with past findings. The two ideas, Tian Dao and Qun Dao, are often used and elaborated by Yan Fu; therefore the thesis explores in depth the two important ideas by analyzing Yan Fu’s collections. In order to discuss Tian Dao and Qun Dao, the thesis first has to tackle the problematic of Dao. Dao builds Yan Fu’s architectonics and cosmology. It does not only represent order but also is a metaphysical idea in Yan Fu’s system of thinking. The fourth chapter discusses the Tian Dao of Yan Fu’s collection. The research displays how Yan Fu connects Tian Dao and Evolution and trusts that the struggle of human will advance human beings themselves. In the Last Chapter, the thesis elaborates on Yan Fu explains what is human nature. He thought human nature is political nature; human beings make progress because of using the correct method of political, which he defined as Qun Dao. In conclusion, Qun Dao is the main idea of Yan Fu’s thinking, and is the way to the world of peace, wealth and liberty. Yan Fu also pays attention to the balance between Tian Dao and Qun Dao. For that matter, supplementary comments are made on this issue.
