Abstract
NAME: Yi-Cheng Wu MONTH/YEAR:January, 2011 ADVISER:Houn-Gee Chen, Ph.D TITLE:The Challenge and Prospect for Post PC Era-A Case Study of Taiwan IT industry Taiwan IT industry is the target of this research. In this research, analysis tools such as “the Five Forces of Competition”, “the Diamond System”, “Co-opetition & Value Net” and “Four Actions Frame” were utilized to analyze the strength and weakness of external and internal environment, and to find out the challenge and prospect for post PC era. Given the historical review of PC times, it is easy to understand that Taiwan IT industry started with OEM, then revolved into ODM, OGL model by stretching its value chain as time went by. Because of fierce competition, it is inevitable that gross profit margin getting into very thin for players in the industry. Even though Taiwan IT industry is known for its domination in the area, it does not provide Taiwan IT industry with any advantage in terms of profit improvement. Moreover, post PC era is coming. During this juncture of paradigm shift, how does Taiwan IT industry survive and do well? Is its core competency dependable and sustainable? What will be its challenge and opportunity? With a detailed data collection and analysis, there are four new findings with regard to the trend of cloud computing, at the same time, seven conclusions have been achieved and followed with another three recommendations as below: Seven conclusions: 1) Post PC era is Cloud Computing era 2) Cloud Computing era is an Always On era 3) Cloud Computing era is a Digital Commerce era 4) Cloud Computing era is a Prosumer era 5) Cloud Computing era is an On-demand era 6) Taiwan IT industry should create a Monopolistic Competition advantage 7) In cloud computing era, service is the king Three recommendations to Taiwan IT industry: 1) For OEM: Raise core competency level to a monopolistic competition advantage 2) For OBM: A combination of hardware and software, provide a total solution to the customers of cloud computing 3) For prosumers: Leverage cloud computing service, start new business flourishingly
