Abstract
Catch, effort, and sexed size data are essential information for stock assessment.
Total catch of blue marlin in the Pacific were available from FAO, of which large
proportions were taken by Japanese and Taiwanese vessels. Fishing effort (in hooks)
and catch data of 5 ゚squares for longline fisheries in the Pacific were obtained from
SPC, and for Japanese and Taiwanese longline fleets that were obtained from Far Seas
Fisheries Research Laboratory and from Overseas Fisheries Development Council,
respectively. For the length data, 2,007 blue marlin were measured at Shinkang Fish
Market and 630 at Tungkang Fish Market. Sex ratio of blue marlin sampled was 0.40
at Shinkang and 0.42 at Tungkang. The assessment model for blue marlin was
constructed and modified according to the results of spatial and temporal analyses
using GAM. Status of blue marlin stock in the Pacific will be assessed when sexed
length data and operating information of longline fisheries were obtained.
