Abstract
This study investigates moped route choice behavior using GPS trajectory data from riders aged 20–30 in Taipei. Applying discrete choice models, it accounts for overlapping alternatives and unobserved taste heterogeneity. Results confirm that path size correction factors effectively mitigate interdependence among route options. Additionally, this study finds that the latent class model is superior to the mixed logit model in capturing heterogeneity. Empirical evidence suggests that moped riders tend to prefer routes with right turns and mixed residential areas, likely due to the high maneuverability of mopeds. Differences in route preferences between shared and privately owned moped riders highlight the lower risk sensitivity of the former. Moreover, variations in preferences between local and nonlocal riders, as well as between regular and irregular riders, further emphasize key policy implications. Overall, this study enriches route choice modeling by addressing the underexplored routing preferences of moped riders.
