Abstract
The effect of norbornene content on the isochronal mechanical relaxation spectra
of cyclic olefin copolymers utilizing a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) was
studied in this work. As the amount of norbornene rings increased, the glass transition
temperatures of the copolymers shifted to higher temperatures. From the result of
DMA, it was clear the molecular motions were influenced by ring structures. Further
analysis by Havriliak-Negami (HN) equation indicated that the higher the norbornene
content, the larger the activation energy and the change of entropy of molecular
motions. The analysis of parameters, and of HN equation showed copolymers
with higher norbornene contents had lower values of That is, the intra-chain
molecular motions were affected by the ring structures. The values of , however,
were very close to unity due to the amorphous nature of the copolymers. Therefore, it
was not easy to examine the effect of norbornene content on inter-chain motions.
