Abstract
Public library needs to serve all kinds of readers, including immigrants. But the immigrants’ information needs are very different from those of local residents. Some Public libraries in America and Europe offer “Immigrant Readers’ Services” to help immigrant minority. In Taiwan, the immigrant population of Southeast-Asian Female spouses is increasing year by year. Public Libraries in Taiwan should offer services for them. The thesis aims to study how to provide the services and make suggestions to the public libraries in Taiwan.
The thesis investigated the opinions of public library managers in Taipei area about offering library services to Southeast-Asian Female Spouses, and got the following results: the managers recognize the necessity of providing services, and believe that “providing collections” is the most important thing that public library should do. But, now in Taipei area, offering library services to Southeast-Asian Female Spouses is not popular. The results also showed that public libraries in Taipei area have difficulties of lacking experienced librarians and short of funding.
In conclusion, providing services for Southeast-Asian Female Spouses still has many problems to be overcome. In order to provide good services, public libraries in Taiwan need to purchase multicultural collections, sponsor library activities for immigrants, and train librarians to provide multicultural library services.
