Abstract
Lithium niobate (LiNbO3) is an important material in the optics industry for various
applications. Typically, the lithium niobate (CLN) crystal grown from its congruent melt, i.e.,
Li/Nb= 48.4/51.6, contains a large Li-deficiency, which introduces significant intrinsic defects. A
novel horizontal immersed- heater zone-leveling process was developed to grow near
stoichiometric lithium niobate (SLN) crystals. The heater was made of a platinum plate and
crucible was made of a pla tinum foil. Due to the localized heating, the power consumption was
also low. Through a careful control of the thermal environment, a convex growth interface was
obtained, and the grown crystal, having large grains, was reasonably good in terms of its
composition and optical properties. Due to the wetting of the solution and the crucible, secondary
grains were easily induced from the crucible wall, so that the growth of a single crystal was still
difficult. Nevertheless, crystal growth could be observed clearly through the top window, and this
provided useful information for process improvement.
