Abstract
In the next century, most of the new
freeways in Taiwan tend to pass through
mountain areas. Construction of freeways
through mountains are anticipated to
encounter problems of ground water flow in
tunnels and depletion of water resources in
the nearly areas. The currently constructed
Pinglin tunnel of Taipei-Ilan freeway has
often been stucked due to large quantities of
ground water flow in the Sezleng Sandstone
of Toucheng area. In addition, dewatering
of seepage in the tunnel could reduce the
ground water level in the Sezleng Sandstone
and spring flow in the nearby area. It is
essential to understand hydrogeologic
conditions in the area to resolve these
problems. The proposed project will
conduct surface hydrogeologic survey,
borehole logging and analysis, monitoring of
ground water level, hydrogeologic
framework, modeling of regional ground
water flow and tunnel ground water seepage
in the Sezleng Sandstone of Toucheng area.
Results of this study would provide
fundamental hydrogeologic information for
evaluating ground water flow in Pinglin
tunnel and its impact on local water use.
Moreover, the research would enhance the
fundamental understanding concerning the
ground water system in mountain areas and
pave the way to resolve ground water
seepage and water resources problems
during the construction of tunnels in the
future.
