Abstract
This study addressed the possible role of polyelectrolyte flocculation on microbial density levels in a waste-activated sludge. Such an effect is commonly ignored. Applying polyelectrolyte reduced the density level of coliform bacteria in the flocculated sludge. Polyelectrolyte also reduced the 5-day biochemical oxygen demand of sludge, possibly retarding the subsequent biodegradation processes. ? 2001 Society of Chemical Industry.
