Abstract
The principal investigator has conducted a
series of study on bridge scour and developed
comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) numerical
models that can simulate flow field and scour
evolution around bridge pier reasonably well.
In order to enhance practical application of the
simulation models, simplification of models are
done in the present study. In the 1st year of
this 3-year project, the flow and scour models
were improved and employed to investigate the
effects of unsteady flow characteristics. In the
2nd year, research efforts had been emphasized
on scour simulation with nonuniform sediment.
With quasi-steady approach, scour simulations
under unsteady flow condition with nonuniform
sediment were conducted by employing the
improved models.
To test the applicability of the morphological
model (including 3D flow model and scour
model), it is necessary to calibrate and verify
the models with comprehensive data. Hence,
in the 3rd year, the flow fields with flatbed and
with scour hole measured by Graf (1998) and
Dey (1995), respectively, are adopted to further
verify the 3D flow model. For scour model,
two experiments ( 9 . 0 u / u c * * = and 65 . 0 u / u c * * = )
are carried out under steady flow with uniform
sediment to obtain data for the scour evolution
at pier nose as well as scour hole elevations at
four different time stages. Then these
experimental data are used to calibrate and
verify the scour model.
From the results of numerical simulations,
2
the 3D flow model can simulate flow field well,
and the verification of scour model is quite
reasonable.
