Abstract
This project is to continue the first
year’s study: The Re/presentation of China in
Latin American Literature ─ from the
Modernism to the Postmodernism. The topic
is modified into “The Re/presentation of
Orientalism and China in the Postmodernism
of Latin American Literature: Borges, Paz
and Sarduy.” The oriental culture (the
religious factor, especially) and Chinese
philosophy have been studied at the same
time in the literary works of these three
writers. This project has looked also into the
phenomena of the postmodernism in literary
expression, such as the metaphor, the
fantastic technique, the influence of surrealism, the metafiction, or the mimesis of
baroque style, etc., so as to find out if these
factors have influenced their creation in
writing when they handle the theme of
Orientalism.
As regard to the literary works, I have
focused on Borge’s fantastic short stories:
Manuel de zoología fantástica, El jardín de
los senderos que se bifurcan, El libro de
arena, El hacedor, El Aleph and La moneda
de hierro; Paz’s essays, such as Vislumbres
de la India, Corriente alterna and
Conjunciones y disjunciones; and on
Sarduy’s novels, such as De donde son los
cantantes, Maitreya and Cobra.
By way of these literary works and
according to the interpretation of these three
writers, I’ve discussed the multiple image
and symbolization of the Indian and the
Tibetan religion, the Islam and the Buddhism,
in comparison with the occidental religion
such as Christianity. Special attention has
been paid also on studying the concept of
time of Paz and Borges when they dealed
with the Christianity and the Confucianism.
On the other hand, the cross-cultural
problem between the Chinese immigrants,
the Cuban culture and the Spanish
colonization on Cobra has been studied as a
theme of identification conflict.
