Abstract
An experimental study on the effect of insoluble substances on the exothermic absorption removal of gaseous pollutants with chemical reaction is presented. Ammonia is absorbed into sulfuric acid solution, while oleic acid (OA) is introduced as the insoluble substance, either in the gas flow or in the absorbent liquid. Both the ammonia absorption rate and the surface temperature rise are measured to examine the effect of the insoluble substances on the chemical absorption system. It is observed that the insoluble substance of OA obviously affects the ammonia absorption rate. In general, the presence of insoluble substance of OA tends to reduce the absorption rate and the surface temperature rise in chemical absorption system, for both cases with the insoluble substance in the gas flow and in the absorbent liquid. Although the increase of surface temperature rise may on the one hand increase the reaction rate constant, it may on the other hand reduce the solubility of the gas and hence the absorption rate. The presence of insoluble substance further complicates those enhancing and reducing effects in the exothermic absorption system. The net effect of these competing factors then determines the resulting absorption rate. The results of this analysis are useful for better understanding the exothermic gas‐liquid contactor in which chemical reagents are adopted in the removal of gaseous pollutants with insoluble substances contaminated in the system.
