Abstract
This doctoral dissertation investigates ring filters and power amplifiers in microwave and millimeter wave systems.
A miniature dual mode ring filter using shunt capacitances is described in detail in this dissertation. Circuit analysis shows that this new topology can reduce the size of the dual-mode ring filter by increasing the shunt capacitance values, and design equations are derived. Experiments are demonstrated on printed circuit board, LTCC, and monolithic GaAs substrate. This novel filter structure is small, can be made tunable, and is functional up to millimeter-wave frequencies.
A series-input and series-output transformer coupled stack is proposed as a power combining method for power amplifier designs. In a stack amplifier, the devices are stacked in series rather than in parallel for power combination. This has the advantages of increased input and output impedance, and also keeping the current at a relatively low level, allowing the amplifier to be easily matched, and reducing ohmic loss in array systems. A 1-W 4-cell power amplifier at 5 GHz using 2μm HBT is realized to demonstrate this concept. A 2-W power amplifier is also designed to improve the performance of the first design.
