Abstract
The exaggerated grain growth of Fe-doped Al2O3 during sintering in air and subsequent annealing in H2 was investigated. Large Al2O3 platelets can be formed by adding Fe2O3 and annealing in a reducing atmosphere. The size of the platelet can be as large as 260 μm, which implies that the composition investigated has the potential to prepare sapphire single crystal.
