Abstract
This study proposes an approach for implementing BIM (Building Information Modeling) into preparatory stage of tender invitation for Taiwan public construction. First of all, this approach constructs a 3D BIM model to represent the physical components of a facility to be built as many as possible. Next, the work item codes are also embedded in the components as their attributes. Finally, with the BIM model, the quantities of the components can therefore be estimated with good accuracy and exported into PCCES (Public Construction Cost Estimate System) for preparing budget and tender documents.
Through a case study on a real renovated project of the pedestrian overpass, this study has found that implementing BIM between design and construction stages makes the difference of quantities very small and the difference of project price less than 0.7%. Therefore, implementing BIM into the preparatory stage of tender invitation for Taiwan public construction is ought to improve the consistency between engineering drawings and related tender documents, leading to the reduction of risk for both the owner and contractor.
