Using RNA-seq to Help Identify Functions in Unknown Organs

The modern academic environment has increasingly less room for research that is not hypothesis-driven. Observational or descriptive research is viewed pejoratively, with proposals or papers that do not set about to test a hypothesis less likely to be accepted (Casadevall and Fang, 2008). Simply filling in a lacuna of knowledge is not seen as a worthy goal. More pragmatically, an observational study with no guarantee of a falsified or supported hypothesis that can be published is not seen as a solid investment. © CAB International 2020.
