Abstract
Two closure models, Toor's hypothesis and the 3E closure model, which were originally developed for one-dimensional turbulent reactors, have been extended to turbulent reacting flows with multidimensional nonhomogeneous concentration fields. To test these closure models, a theoretical analysis of a reactive plane mixing layer has been carried out for comparison with available experimental data. Good agreement is obtained for the distribution of mean concentration and the concentration correlation coefficient. However, the result for the distribution of concentration fluctuations is not satisfactory. To overcome this shortcoming, modified versions of Toor's hypothesis and the 3E closure model have been developed which lead to improvements in the predictions of concentration fluctuations. © 1993.
