Abstract
Seating cushions for wheelchair users usually include air-filled cushion (such as:
Roho, Systam) and gel-filled cushion (Jay cushion). The Roho cushion is proved to be more effective in relieving pressure than Jay-cushion. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of air-filled cushion and gel-filled cushion on reaching in spinal cord injured patients. The methods were ten thoracic complete injured patients (T1-T12) participated in this study. They were injured 93.5± 19. lmonths (range 9-l70months). The subject sat on the cushion put on an adjustable chair which was placed on a force plate (AMTI). The feet of the subject were placed on another force plate in front of the chair. The procedures included the reaching by seating on the Systam or Jay cushion with eyes open or close. The Vicon 250 Motion Analysis System recorded the whole action. The results indicated that the reaction time, movement time, reaching distance, center of pressure response, the pelvic tilt angle, upper trunk flexion angle, and the head flexion angle were not significantly different between Systam and Jay cushions in patients with eyes either open or closed. However, the movement time with eyes closed was longer than that with eyes open (p< 0.05). The conclusion was that the air-filled Systam and the gel-filled Jay cushion do not make significant differences in the functional reaching and dynamic sitting balance. The reason for the slow movement with eyes closed might be explained by the visual
compensation of balance control.
