Abstract
The major purpose of this study is to
understand the intergenerational exchange
between the adult children of the farmers'
villages and their parents by using
questionnaire and focus groups. A total of
318 persons were investigated by
questionnaire and 11 focus groups were
interviewed.
The study finds the intergenerational
exchange of the adult children of the farmers'
villages with their parents is common. The
items and the frequencies of the
intergenerational exchange are variable
because of parent’s and adult children’s sex.
The adult children do more for their parents
than their parents do for the adult children.
The parents do more for the sons than they do
for the daughter. The adult children do more
for their mothers than do for their fathers.
The sons do more for the parents than the
daughter do for the parents. Mother do more
for the adult children than father do for the
children.
The factors affecting the adult children
to do something for their parents include (1)
the distance between the houses of the
parents and the children, (2) the degree of
intimate relationship, (3) the perception of
filial responsibilities. On the other hand, the
factors affecting the parents to do something
for their children include (1) the children’s
age, (2) the distance between the houses of
the parents and the children.
