Abstract
Since 1990, construction firms in Taiwan have become more global in the pursuit of opportunity in emerging countries because of the decline of domestic infrastructure demands, financial support to developing countries of international organizations, new developing in emerging countries, and etc. In the face of different international funding agencies, as World Bank or Asian Developing Bank, firms are called for international cooperation with local firms in developing countries. It is to upgrade of the local technology level. The partner firms with different background encounter a number of problems during the project. All of them search for good performances, as working on schedule, making profit, and learning from each others. The study of engineering firms, it causes for cooperation with project and long time period of each one. It is different from manufacturing cooperation with short period cooperation and high frequency repeat. The parallel relationship is also regular cooperation type, especially in international aid project. Whether of the two side friction or engineering problem in the project, we observe the dispute and solutions in the period, and hope to find out the key point of the cooperation. There are thousands of construction SMEs in Taiwan, and they are interested in internationalization. They eagerly learned from the developed firms in 1980s, and now they transfer their knowledge to emerging market. We study in cooperation with strangers, and learn from the new international firms with different behavior and cooperation model. esearch in case study in depth interviews finds out the successful models and factors. Several patterns in our study are strategy alliance, project cooperation, joint venture company, joint venture project, and etc. The cooperation with firms come from different countries are presented in culture conflicts. We find our two important trust types in cooperation. Cognition-based trust is influenced in outside factors, and affect-based trust is in inside factors. Both of them influence performance in different ways.It is found that good interactive between partners build up affect-based trust, the trust go over unfit of outside factors. Firms with more and more cooperation experience should learn from it, and set up the assessment rule to partners in order to ease the problem in cooperation period.
