Abstract
Researchers have demonstrated clear benefits to people in their relationships with companion animals. However, little is known about how dog walkers may benefit from walking their dogs. The purpose of the current research was to investigate potential leisure benefits to dog walkers when walking their dogs and it was conducted via questionnaires, and the leisure benefits of the current research contain three categories: balancing living experiences, promoting the wellness of lifestyle, and enhancing the quality of life. Collected data have been analyzed through Descriptive Statistical Analysis, independent sample t-test, and One-way ANOVA. Research results showed leisure benefits experienced by dog walkers were high. The greatest was balancing living experiences, while the lowest was enhancing the quality of life. Parts of leisure benefits were significantly different among dog walkers who have different gender, the durations of dog-walking, main activities and body-sized dogs. That means the balancing living experiences and promoting the wellness of lifestyle parts of leisure benefits experienced by dog walkers who are female and had longer duration of dog-walking were higher. In addition, dog walkers who carried out different main activities while walking the dog showed a significant difference in experienced enhancing the quality of life part of leisure benefits. That means enhancing the quality of life part of leisure benefits experienced by dog walkers who played with dogs while walking the dog were higher. Finally, dog walkers who walked different body-sized dogs showed a significant difference in experienced promoting the wellness of lifestyle and enhancing the quality of life parts of leisure benefits. That means promoting the wellness of lifestyle and enhancing the quality of life parts of leisure benefits experienced by dog walkers who walked medium-sized or big-sized dogs were higher.
