Abstract
This paper aims to identify the necessity of legalization on the certification of competency of skilled workers in BIM practice in domestic and regional. Regionally, the engineer qualification recognizing is one of the eight professional qualification recognition schemes in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (collectively referred to as “ASEAN”). Building Information Modeling (BIM) has become crucial in the construction industry, and BIM practitioners are raising. BIM practitioners in a construction project are considered as important as other specialists such as construction surveying, planning, design, field supervision, and quantity surveying. But BIM practitioner certifications haven't legalized and recognized yet. A survey conducted in early 2020 in the ASEAN construction industry collected 189 respondents' opinions. Most of the respondents agree that legalize BIM practice certificates into the national legal system is necessary as well as the region agreements. Besides, survey respondents raised the demand on the BIM courses systems with the national evaluation criteria required for BIM training institutes and schools. Moreover, regionally BIM practice certifications is the necessary step in erasing the artificial barriers to the free movement and practice of professional engineers in ASEAN in particular and all the nations in the world in general. Also, there are significant shreds of evidence suggested that the benefits of the BIM experts only become realizable if the certifications for BIM practitioners are systematic and recognized. ? 2021 American Institute of Physics Inc..
