Abstract
To visualize the construction sequences in advance can help engineers in identifying potential problems about construction logistics, work flow, and resource arrangement, etc. Besides, to generate an effective construction sequence can also facilitate the management of schedules, costs, as well as qualities. The objective of this research is to develop a computer tool for assisting engineers in arranging, visualizing, reviewing, and modifying construction sequences so that the efficiency of the entire construction process can be increased.
In this research, we develop a computer system for simulating construction sequences in 3D virtual space, named CS3D, to serve as an effective tool for engineers to arrange, review and optimize construction sequences. This system takes advantage of the IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) standard that supports a building information model for describing, exchanging and sharing geometrical information and related attributes of buildings within the AEC industry. Some numerical algorithms are also implemented in the CS3D system to automatically generate a good initial construction sequence. Furthermore, Friendly graphical interfaces are designed for users to edit, query and manage the sequence information in a effective and efficient way.
