Abstract
This research proposed two self-concept
structures based on Erikson's self-identity
theory: self-complexity and self-certainty, to
explain the development of self-identity on the
internet and discuss their effect on the internet
addiction.
The results showed that complexity and
self-exploration behavior complement and
progress mutually, while certainty helps to
develop a concrete self-identity from
self-exploration behavior. There were
significant correlations between high
self-complexity and internet addiction indices.
The mediation analysis also showed that it was
the multiple facet tendency, shown through
extensive self-exploration behavior on the
internet, resulted in internet addiction for high
complexity people. On the other hand, people
with low certainty found it more difficult to
use the prototype matching strategy facing
exploration opportunities. They tended to
wander among different internet situations,
less likely to have self-reflection upon
exploration experiences in order to enhance
self-knowledge, and hence were more likely to
be addicted to the internet. Aside from having
main effect towards internet addiction,
complexity and certainty also had an
interaction effect for internet addiction
tendency. High certainty significantly buffered
the effect of high complexity on addiction
tendency. If a person had high complexity and
certainty, he would be less likely to be caught
on the net, whereas he would have higher
addiction tendency if he had lower
self-certainty. Accordingly, we believe
multiple selves with good adaptation on the
internet comes from an integration of self
concept traits of high complexity and high

certainty, such a person would be able to
establish self acknowledgment from extensive
exploration experiences on the internet,
develop specific self-identity, and can hence
avoid the physical and psychological problems
due to internet addiction.
