Abstract
In the past, researches on the Book of Odes in the Warring States period are
mostly done based on the citations and application of the book of various schools of
thought and their exponents during the Pre-Qin period. The study of the Book of
Odes in the schools of Mencius and Xunzi in Confucianism then became especially
important. Following the publication of the bamboo pamphlets of Jingmen Guodian
and the collection of the bamboo pamphlets of the ancient Chu Kongzi Shilun in the
Shanghai Museum, and other unearthed relics and artifacts in the recent years,
researchers could get hold of more reference and research materials, providing a
wider scope of study on the Book of Odes.
This research attempts to conduct an in-depth research, combining historical
documents on the Warring States period, and recently excavated relics and artifacts.
We will base our research on the foundation of previous results, and in the end
achieve a thorough discussion of the interpretations of the Book of Odes in the
Warring States period. Our first goal is to understand the transitions of the methods
of interpretations, aims etc. from the Spring and Autumn period to the Warring States
period, so as to recognize the hermeneutic tradition of the Book of Odes during the
earlier period; our second goal is to distinguish the course of development of the
notion of canonical studies via the researches on the Book of Odes in the Warring
States period.
