Abstract
In the second year of this project, a series of
poly(p-phenylene) (PPP) derivatives were synthesized with each phenyl units attaching a short side chain composed of a flexible segment varying with lengths, a biphenyl tolane mesogenic moiety, and one of the following terminal groups: -NO2, -CN, and -CF3. The results indicate that most of the monomers with
such arranged side chains exhibited a wide range of mesophases, but only part of their polymers possessed a nematic phase observed by a polarized optical microscope. Except those terminated with nitro groups, other polymers have theirπ- electrons in main chain and side chains coupled together and showed only one photoluminescence peak appeared in a wavelength range of 400 ~ 450 nm. When the polymers with side chains were aligned by casting the solutions to a rub-aligned polyimide films, their
photoluminecent intensity in aligned direction was 4 times higher than that in transverse direction. IR analysis indicated that the attached mesogenic groups were preferentially oriented to the aligned direction.
