Abstract
This study compares the performance and market reactions of R&D (research
and development) expenditures of Taiwan, United States, Japan, and Korea. I expect
that United States and Japan should have a better performance than Taiwan and Korea.
This is due to the fact that the R&D activities of the two more advanced countries
could be more fundamental and more related to the improvement of company’s core
competition ability.
The empirical evidence shows that on average, for Taiwan, United States, Japan,
and Korea, one dollar of R&D input would create, respectively, 2.376, 7.568, 5.269,
and 3.012 dollars of accounting earnings in the future. However, only the
coefficients of the market reactions to the R&D expenditures in United States and
Japan are significant.
