Abstract
In this study, we investigated the roles of two commonly used amine solvents, ethylenediamine and hydrazine, in the solvothermal process used for the formation of ZnO mirowires (MWs) and nanowires (NWs), respectively. The strong coordination between ethylenediamine and the Zn atoms of the (0001) plane of hexagonal ZnO crystalloid restricts the anisotropic [0001] growth direction of hexagonal crystalloids, resulting in the formation of ZnO MWs. Also, ethylenediamine was able to coordinate with Te to form [Te-EN]2- complexes, decreasing the possibility for coordination between ethylenediamine and the Zn atoms of the (0001) plane of the hexagonal ZnO crystalloid. As a result, when Te was added in the solvothermal process using ethylenediamine, ZnO NWs were prepared instead of ZnO MWs. ? 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.
