Abstract
Wind turbines incorporate a generator as an energy device to transfer mechanical energy into electrical energy. Due to the diversity of the environmental factors, the characteristics of wind turbines have different solutions. As an important device to transfer the energy, the generator requires a specific design to meet requirements from different types of wind turbines.he objective for this thesis is to propose a generator design for City-Type Vertical Axial Wind Turbine. In particular, it addresses the question of how to reduce the cost while reaching the target of high efficiency, as well as the requirements of low starting torque and low speed.his thesis is based upon the characteristic requirements from a 1kW Vertical Axial Wind Turbine. After the initial specification setting, the generator was designed using FME software, Jmag. A prototype generator was constructed, the performances of the prototype generator were measured and compared with the predicted results for experimental verification.his thesis also presents the evaluating method of an AFPM generator for the application in wind turbines. The evaluating method incorporating the analytical and 2D finite element analyses addresses a fast and easy way to predict the performance of generators. It can be concluded from the predicted evaluation that it should be able to speed up wind turbine generator design.
