Abstract
Typhoon Herb hit Taiwan on July 31 and
August 1, 1996 and caused the most serious
disaster in the past thirty years. Among the
most damaged affected areas the Hsini-yi
Township in Nantou County had experienced
25 deaths, 16 missing persons, and hazard
cost by debris flows increased up to U.S. 1.3
Million. This study explored the relationship
between land use and environmental hazard
by spatial analysis and environmental
perception approaches.
The result shows that slope is the major
effect of landslide on slope land with slope
greater that 55%. However, land use becomes
dominant effect of landslide on slope land
with gentle slope. Among different land use
types, tea farm and dry drops are highly
related to landslide hazard. From
environmental perception point of view,
residents of the study area feel that there is
no relation between land use types and nature
hazards at all. They prefer to stay at the
original places instead of moving. However,
they would like to have more public works of
hazard mitigation by government.
