Abstract
Spatial variability of soil properties is crucial in performance-based design. To evaluate the spatial variability of soil parameters in the field, two proposed methods validated by numerical simulations were applied: (1) the ground motion coherency function model and (2) the static approach on surface wave analysis. The Large Scale Seismic Test (LSST) sites at Lotung and Hualien were selected as the research site to assess the applicability of these methods in estimating in situ shear wave velocity (Vs) profile variability. Both methods demonstrated reasonable agreement in estimating the coefficient of variation (COV) of the near-surface Vs profile, but discrepancies arose when estimating COV for deeper soil layers. Moreover, both methods indicate that the scale of fluctuation is less than 3 m at these sites.
