Abstract
Seismic resistive design is a developing technology. The prevailing design for this technology is the use of performance base methodology. A specific design in performance base methodology is displacement-based design. This specific design acknowledges displacement as the main parameter during its experimentation. Engineers base the performance of their structures on the maximum displacement required. This thesis is based on the concept of substitute structure to strengthen a reinforced concrete structure by supplemental damper, and propose a suitable procedure for displacement-base design by equivalent stiffness and damping. The proposed procedure will be compared to the nonlinear time history analysis computer program and the famous methods, ATC-40 and FEMA273.
In order to understand the accuracy of the proposed procedure, this thesis uses this procedure to strengthen a nonductile frame with lap-splice by supplemental BRB damper and CS strengthen method. The experimentation will consist of structure analysis, pseudo dynamic test, and quasi-static test.
