Needle Guidance Using Laser Generated Leaky Acoustic Waves

Abstract
Ultrasound-guided needle operation is often performed during tissue biopsy and drug delivery. One main problem is that the angle between the transducer and the needle is limited due to the reflection of the ultrasound waves. A method based on leaky acoustic waves was proposed. With this method, laser pulses are emitted at the top of the needle to generate acoustic waves. These acoustic waves propagate along the needle and the leaky wave signals are detected by an array transducer. The needle position can be calculated based on the phase velocities of two different wave modes. In our current study, we propose an iterative approach to improve accuracy of the needle position calculations. Results show that the detection depth is more than 33 mm and the insertion angle is up to 30 degrees. It is also demonstrated that the proposed approach outperforms conventional B mode ultrasound.
