Abstract
In this work, two types of smart medication systems, the Nursing-Home-Care System and the Mobile-Care System, are designed, implemented and demonstrated. These proposed systems employ the wireless sensing network technologies. The proposed systems consist of two major components, a master panel (MP) and seven portable smart pill-boxes (SPB). An MP serves as a network gateway/database for the SPBs registered under the MP. Each SPB, which has four pill cells for stores medicines, can independently remind the user to take medicines at specified times.
For the Nursing-Home-Care System”, ZigBee wireless sensing technologies were employed. The system is mainly designed for senior citizens with chronic diseases. A novel medicine sensing method was developed for detecting pills. A database was also developed for monitoring, recording, synchronizing and updating medication processes. Furthermore, the proposed systems were tested in the Zhi-Shan Nursing Home. For the Mobile-Care System, the Bluetooth® technology was employed. Also, the Android-based smart phone system is adopted as the demonstration platform.
