Abstract
The machining characteristics in EDM drilling of high aspect ratio small holes were investigated in this paper. Taguchi design methodology and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were applied and pertinent process parameters were identified. By regression analysis, mathematical models of material removal rate, electrode wear rate and the amount of hole-enlargement were established. Approach to estimate the total number of the holes that can be drilled by a single electrode and the machining time before EDM drilling was then formulated. Drilling operation by immersing the workpiece in water was proposed. Experimental results reveal that both of the drilling-through capability and the surface condition at the exit of the through hole are greatly improved.
