Abstract
This article attempts at an analysis of Hsiao Kung-ch'?an's (1897~1981) study of history of Chinese political thought. After sketching Hsiao's biography (section 1), we discuss the background pertaining to Hsiao's teaching career and his preparation for the writing of A History of Chinese Political Thought (published in 1945) in section 2. Section 3 delineates Hsiao's analysis of the defining characteristics and his periodization of China's political thought. Section 4 considers Hsiao's study of China's political thought in the context of Chinese and Western scholarship recounting the study of political thought. We conclude that Hsiao is methodologically inclined to "contextualism." However, the problem of value remains the core issue in Hsiao's world of thought. It is in this sense that we may say Hsiao is a syncretist in cultural and methodological senses.
