Abstract
The aims of the study are to: 1) establish community women’s health promotion plan
based on empowerment perspectives, using menopause as an example, 2) transfer
medicalization of women’s health experiences into positive health promotion, 3)
increase community women’s physical awareness and self-sufficiency, 4) build
friendly community culture and medical environment for menopausal women, 5)
increase community sensitivity toward health related issues and establish community
health service based on women’s need.
Through participatory action research design, the ‘community empowerment
model‘ has been built by nine women’s NGOs and totally 30 women in this study.
After participating in a two-day advocacy workshop, the women in each NGO have
worked together to strengthen the health needs inside the organization initiated by
menopausal issue and build network for the outside women’s NGOs. They form the
‘ Menopausal self-help group”. They share the experiences of life events, turning
points, illness and help seeking behaviors. They also confront the physical and
emotional challenges and the way of coping. Furthermore, they also exchange their
resources in order to build a better environment of their own organization as well as to
enhance the sister NGOs. Follow up the field visits to those NGOs, the health
promotion program on the issue of menopause have been initiated based on different
preparation of individual NGOs.
The study outcomes fulfilled the factors of empowerment model, such as clarification
for ambiguous information, resource exchange, network built, self participation and .
partnership building. However, due to SARS outbreak, we only have two months to do
the follow up field visit, we need a longer period follow up in order to evaluate the
implementation of empowerment.
