Abstract
This study explores the attitude of Taiwanese society toward gene technology, investigates how an individual’s social attitude affects the attitude toward gene technology, and examines the impact of social context in which an individual lives on the association between the individual’s social attitude and attitude toward gene technology. Using data of 1023 individuals obtained during the Survey of Genomic Intention conducted in 2003 by the Survey Research Center of Academia Sinica, Taiwan, we performed latent profile analysis to identify the types of attitude toward gene technology and multilevel analysis to examine the effect of an individual’s social attitude on the attitude toward gene technology and evaluate the impact of the individual’s social context on the attitude toward gene technology. The attitude of Taiwanese society toward gene technology is measured on the basis of knowledge of gene technology, risk consciousness toward gene technology, and attitude toward gene products. Based on these factors, results suggest that individuals are divided into two types: pro-gene technology (93.45%) and anti-gene technology (6.55%). Controlling for an individual’s characteristics, the individual’s social attitude toward technology, media contacts, and institutional trust have a significant impact on the individual’s attitude toward gene technology. In addition, an individual’s social context significantly influences the association between the individual’s social attitude and attitude toward gene technology, which is determined by the individual’s knowledge of gene technology, risk consciousness toward gene technology, and attitude toward gene products.
