Abstract
The advantages and disadvantages of grid optimization through re-positioning finite element nodal points (r-method) are discussed. Some of the limitations associatedwith the r-method such as element distortion, geometric complexity, and the convergence problem are examined and overcome. The element distortion problem is resolved by using the h-refinement technique to increase degrees of freedom in the critical regions. Considerations required to keep the geometry and loading conditions of the problem unchanged between iterations are provided. The efficiency concern (cost factor) is also emphasized in order for adaptive analysis to become a practical engineering tool. A computer code has been implemented to demonstrate the concept and to verify the error indicator and nodal repositioning algorithm developed in this study. Several problems are presented to benchmark the algorithm and the computer program. Not only the results show drastic improvement from the initial to optimal models but all the converged solutions are in excellent agreement with solutions available from other sources. © 1993.
