Abstract
Overseas Chinese students must leave home when they come to Taiwan to study. Once they arrive, they must face many challenges as they experience changes in their life and environment. At times this can lead to poor adjustment, and the changes then would not only create stress for the student, but would also affect his/her physical and mental health. The purpose of this was study to investigate the adjustment problems of Chinese students from overseas who registered for the 1993 academic year at one national university. Questionnaires were mailed to 1412 such students , and 517 students responded, making a response rate of 36. 8 %. Data were analyzed by using SPSS computer software analysis. the students had difficulty in Chinese oral expression; 56( 10.9%) of the students had difficulty in Chinese writing ability; 74(14.2 %) of the students felt that the school work load was too heavy; 114(22%) of the students had financial problems and 205(39.7%) of the students worked part time. As to their encountered adjustment problems, the students did not understand the education system in Taiwan; were homesick; did not know the customs in Taiwan; could not answer questions in exams; needed to work part time for living; feared something won't succeed etc. When the students had emotional distress, were frustrated or ill, they got assistance mostly from their friends. For health problems in the past year , 413(79.9%) of the students had common colds. When under stress, 370(71.6 %) of the students felt nervous. Students spent the most time on home work and little for extracurricular activities. An under use of the Foreign Students/Chinese Students from Overseas Affair Office and School Health Center was also noted. It is imperative that students are helped to learn about the Foreign Students/ Chinese Students from Overseas Affair Office and School Health Center so that they can profit from all the services available, when needed. Therefore, the role and function of personnel in the Foreign Students/ Chinese Students from Overseas Affair Office and School Health Center requires urgent attention.
