Abstract
Successful dental restorative materials must resist chemical and mechanical breakdown as well as maintain certain physical properties. Generally, polymer-based compounds have become accepted for anterior tooth restoratives. But their inferior mechanical properties, particularly wear resistance and thermal properties, have restricted their application only in non-stressed areas. Also, conventional dental restorative materials can be satisfied in the view of aestheticism. The object of this study was aimed to develop a new composite resin with the Na O-CaO-P O -SiO system of biogalss as the inorganic filler and BIS-GMA as the resin matrix. The effects of the biogalss concentration on the mechanical strength of BIS-GMA composite resin have been concerned in this study. Acrylate -based composite resin was also prepared as controlled system to compare with the material. The effects of filler content in relation to the microstructure of the materials were observed by scanning electron microscope, electron probe microanalysis and optical microscope. The results indicated that the compressive strength, modulus of rupture and wear thickness of BIS-GMA-based composite resin were reached 225 MPa, and 5.2x10 mm, respectively; but compressive strength, modulus of rapture and wear thickness of acrylate-based composite resin were 158 MPa, 92 MPa and 8 .0x10 mm. The differences in mechanical strength between these two composite resins were attributed to 3-dimensional cross-linking of the BIS -GMA polymer, which provided a stiffer matrix for the material. The mechanical strength initially increased with the filler content, but decreased after 40﹪ addition. The microstructure showed that the inorganic filler seriously aggregated after filler content up to 50﹪. The microcrack were generated around the aggregated area due to resin deficiency, which would lower down the mechanical strength because of the stress concentration during loading. From the results of the tests, the BIS-GMA-based composite resin with bioglass as the inorganic filler will be potentially important for dental restorative material in the future.#A 5293044
