Abstract
Abstract
This paper employs some core concepts of social network and social capital theories to exam a critical topic in mass communication field: the relationship between journalism and their news sources. The major findings are: (1) Strong ties between reporters and sources can facilitate the information flow and help the former get inside news. (2) “Bridges” can be reporters’ valuable sources. (3) Reporters themselves can be bridges, providing special information for their sources. (4) In an organization, middle-level employee or managers, instead of top executives, are most likely to be journalists’ main sources. These points not only challenge the normative presumption of traditional journalism and communication theories, especially the assumption of “close relationship between reporters and their sources would damage journalism ethics”, but also some of today’s popular belief in social capital theories, such as the “strength of weak tie” argument.
