Abstract
In milling glass fiber-reinforced compotsite material, the tool life of special milling tools generally not long and usually costs a lot in the whole precess, because the GFRP is a kind of anisotropic and non-homogenetiy material as well as when the milling temperature is too high, the matrix resin burnt problem occurs. Meanwhile, using wrong milling parameters might cause burrs happened on the cutting surface, it need extra time and process for removing these burrs. For improving tool life and red uce the incidence of these two kind of defects, in this study we disscuss different tool characteristics and milling parameters of effects on tool wear, cutting surface temperature and burrs. The main focus of the article is using Taguchi method to compare the tool wear under different cutting condition, coating and using different temperature of air, as well as we define the area of tool wear to be the tool-life index in this experiment. The results shows that PCD coating can dramatically improve tool life, and using low temperature air with PCD coating tool make tool life worse. However, in none coating tool low temperature air can considerablely reduce flank wear and increase tool life. In order to more clearly realize that how the cutting conditions and tool characteristics is affects tool life, cutting temperatures and surface burrs, this study used five groups univariate experiments for the different spindle speed, feedrate, helix angle, tool teeth and using different temperature air in two spindle speed. Produce a number of effects on the toolwear, the cutting surface temperature and quantity of burrs. meanwhile, measured three-axis force to understand the machanism. Experimental results show that the lower spindle speed and feedrate have a lower toowear area and cutting temperature, but lower speed and higher feed rate will cause an increasing of the quantity of burrs; Smaller helix angle have a lower wear of the tool edge, cutting temperature and the reduced quantity of burrs; More tool edge have a lower toolwear area and a reduced quantity of burrs, but will make the cutting surface temperature higher.
